A couple of pieces of news in the past few days have interested us here at Next2Friends. One is that despite the stagnating economy, shipments of mobile phones actually gained in Q2 of 2008. 42 million unites were shipped which represented an increase of 5.3 percent from last year according to a new study conducted by Strategy Analytics. Motorola is still the leading manufacturer of mobile phones with 25.8 percent of the market share. LG held the second place position. But Blackberry finally broke past a 10 percent market share for the first time. All this speaks pretty loudly on the level of importance cell phones have come to occupy in our lives.
The second piece of news is regarding the smartphone market. As of Q2 2008, the smartphone market posted double digit growth, again, despite the overall economic slowdown according to a study by Synergy Research Group. Apple’s iPhone took the number two spot in this growing market with Blackberry holding onto it’s substantial 46 percent of the market share. But industry analysts acknowledge that the popularity of the iPhone is unprecedented, noting that in just one year Apple has taken the number two spot, something that was unthinkable just a couple of years ago. It is also noted that despite leading the nation in overall mobile phone sales, Motorla’s smartphone market share continues to drop.
Not even economic downturn can slow the growth of mobile technology in people’s lives and as we’ve said before, we are very much committed to expanding the ways people interact with their phones and ultimately each other!
