Next2Friends Members of the Week

Favorite / Featured, Fun With Next2Friends, Next2Friends No Comments »

It’s time again to pick a member of the week this time we decided to feature a new member, albeit a pretty active one.  David Tindall or Horseman as he is known on Next2Friends, joined just about a month ago from the UK. Since then he has chronicled some nights out with friends and seems to be having a great time!  Here is one of his first live streams:

Thanks David and keep the streams coming!

And we cannot forget the wonderful Acid House Flash Mob event that was broadcast live over Next2Friends last Friday.  In case you’re wondering what either Acid House or Flash Mob means check out our blog from last week.  And you can get a better idea of what went on last week at the Liverpool Train Station from this video here:

Great stuff!

The New Treo Pro and Palm

News, Technology, Web / Tech 1 Comment »

 treo_pro.jpg

There is quite a bit of industry buzz around the new Treo Pro, released last week by Palm. Laura M. Holson of the New York Times wrote a pretty neutral article that weighs the forces that Palm has been up against in the past few years, including slipping market share, and outdated Technology.

To be fair, Palm is aware that the Treo Pro, itself, will not turn things around for the company.  Jon Rubenstein, who worked on building Apple’s iconic iMac and iPod, has recently been brought in by Palm to try to turn the tide.  As quoted in the New York Times, “One product isn’t going to make us successful,” he said. “It is a brick in the foundation. And each one has to be better than the last.”

But the Blogoshpere is pretty unimpressed by Palm’s latest effort.  In fact the one piece of consistent praise is around the packaging, which seems to be a close cousin to Apple’s iPhone packaging. Adam Richardson of CNET’s Matter / Anti-Matter wrote, “Underwhelming–that’s the word that comes to mind when I look at the new Palm Treo Pro” in an article titled, Palm Treo Pro - Not Digging It.

And Brian X. Chen of Wired’s Gadget Lab says, “Palm’s buzzworthy Treo is merely a flotation device for the troubled company…” in his article Analyst: Palm Needs a Savior and the Treo Pro Won’t Cut It.

The main complaints being echoed elsewhere revolve around the price tag, the relatively small 320×320 screen, and the “just-up-to-industry-standard” set of features.  John Biggs over at CrunchGear says, “What are my concerns? That people see the nearly $600 price tag and balk…I’ve been promised good things from Palm in the next few months but I worry their time has passed”.

With the advent of the $200 iPhone, ever increasing screen sizes, and 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS pretty much standard on most smartphones today, there seems to be little in the new Treo that really stands out.  In fact the price may very well stand in the way.

Next2Friends Does Back to School Better

Community, Fun With Next2Friends, Social Media 1 Comment »

Problem

The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting cooler and all this can only mean one thing: It’s time to head back to school!  As Megan Morrone states in her hilarious blog “First Day of Kindergarten Stats” parents often have too many choices when it comes to capturing those first few days:

“4 - Number of cameras in my purse.  2 - Number of cameras in my purse that ran out of battery.  1 - Number of cameras in my purse that ran out of memory. 12 - Number of megapixels in the first camera that ran out of battery. 2 - Number of megapixels in the one camera that didn’t run out of battery or memory.”

Do you grab the digital camera?  The camcorder? Extra memory cards?  Batteries?  It’s dizzying the number of choices you have.  And then what if you want to share those precious moments with grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends?  You’ve got to spend all that time uploading or sending individual pictures and videos.  After all is said and done, we’re talking at least a couple hours of time, and probably more.

Solution

Next2Friends has a simple solution to all these problems.  All you need is a compatible mobile phone.  Gone are the days of storing a bunch of photos on a camera.  You can snap and upload photos of your beaming child to the web for anyone to see instantly using Next2Friends Snap Up.

And gone are the days of transferring video to your computer for hours.  You can stream live video of those first cautious steps onto the school bus directly to the web using your mobile phone, viewable by others in real time, with Next2Friends Live.  Kind of like the picture below…well…only if you replaced the screaming fans at the rock show with an image of your beautiful child:)

And the best part is that you can share those photos and videos so easily by either directing people to your profile or generating a recommendation email with a link.  So go ahead, give it a try!  All you stand to lose is a few cameras and camcorders!

Flash Mob and the Next2Friends Members of the Week

Acid House Flash Mob Tonight

This week’s Member of the week was pretty simple to come by:

Smiley

Clearly the undisputed Member of the Week!  Why?  Smiley has made Next2Friends one of the exclusive places where he will be announcing the secret location of tonight’s Acid House Flashmob.   What’s Acid House?  What’s a Flashmob?  Good questions.  From Wikipedia:

Acid House is a sub-genre of house music that emphasizes a repetitive, hypnotic and trance-like style, with samples or spoken lines usually used rather than sung lyrics.”

Again from Wikipedia:

“A Flash Mob is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse.”

Ok, now that we all understand what we’re talking about, tonight, to mark the 20th anniversary of Acid House, at 6:20 GMT a group of people will be gathering Flash Mob style in central London to sing D-Mob’s, “We Call it Aciid”.  People will be encouraged to recreate the feel of a 1988 Acid House party.  Then at 6:30 GMT…it’s over!  Don’t believe us?  It was even reported in the UK’s Guardian blog by Jemima Kiss! And all of the action will be brought to you live on Next2Friends!  Be sure to tune in, and in the mean time check out this awesome video illustrating Smiley’s Acid House dance moves:

Google, Facebook and the Social Shopper

Next2Friends, Social Media, Technology, Web / Tech No Comments »

The Battle, Who is Fighting and Why

Robert Scoble wrote a great article on the battle between Facebook and Google to capture the “Social Shopping” market.  Social Shopping has been around for a long time, albeit on a smaller scale before the Internet.  It says that the people who influence our decisions are the ones closest to us.  If my best friend loves something I will give it much greater consideration than if I just saw a random advertisement for it.  With the growth of Social Networks and the almost instantaneous availability of information streaming from people, the concept of Social Shopping has taken on new meaning.  Now people don’t need to run into one anther on the street to tell each other about the great shirt they just bought, or the movie they just saw.

So backing up to Scoble’s article.  He very clearly breaks down purchasing something into three phases.  Phase One is Need Generation, basically becoming aware of something or beginning to want something you didn’t before.  Phase Two is Research, where you are learning about what you will get, searching for what’s best for you, and finding out what others think.  This is the Social Shopping phase.  Phase Three is Purchasing, where you are basically looking for where you will complete the transaction.

Scoble goes on to say that Google has locked up Phase Three by controlling the search market.  No argument there.  But it is in Phase Two that the battle is being fought.  Facebook has Facebook Connect and Google has FriendConnect.  Both are attempts to facilitate and capitalize on Social Shopping. Interestingly enough, neither are finding much traction which has left those in the Social Networking space scratching their heads as to how to monetize this concept.  All the pieces are there, why isn’t it working?  Indeed no one really knows.

Some Answers…Maybe

Scoble, again points to one company that is tipping the scales in their direction using Social Media.  Gary Vaynerchuk’s Wine Library.TV is a great example of how someone is using new technology to reach into Phase One and Phase Two to create demand for his product.  Gary sells wine and essentially creates Phase One in people’s mind by broadcasting a show highlighting different wines.  He then reaches into Phase Two by allowing community to flourish around his broadcasts.  People comment, share their experiences and make recommendations to one another.

And another answer, which isn’t mentioned in Scoble’s post, could revolve around Geo-Tagging technology, or the ability to leave messages in location-based physical space.  While it may be more possible than ever to put Social Shopping “information” out there, it isn’t accessible to people when they can use it. Geo-Tagging could bridge this gap.  Imagine a situation where you could access all kinds of recommendations from a network, be it friends on a Social Network or impartial parties, on virtually anything in the physical world while you’re actually there.  This will require a critical mass to work but has already proved viable on the Internet by sites like Yelp.  The reach of relevant social information to mobile is definitely coming…the question is when and through whom.

Next2Friends Summer Contest Winner

Community, Fun With Next2Friends, Next2Friends 1 Comment »

And the winner of the Next2Friends Share Your Summer Contest is…(drum roll)…

Wayne Anthony

Wayne was responsible for sending over 500 people to Next2Friends using the new contact importer!  Wayne will receive a new Motorola Q™ which, along with many other Windows Mobile® devices like the Samsung Blackjack II™, is fully compatible with Next2Friends Live!

zjk0ythl.jpg

Here is what Wayne had to say about winning:

“Brilliant. I’ve been a heavy user of next2Friends ever since I found out about you, and am really chuffed to have won. I can’t recommend the service highly enough for its wide range of uses. I’m an independent film-maker and being able to immediately  get content out onto the internet for others to see will make a big difference to how we work. I’m also fascinated with how technology is innovating film-making, and Next2Friends is a stand-out example of how things are evolving.

As a consumer, Next2Friends offers me a great way to socialise, share information about what I’m up to, and use cool technology. Really excited to be a part of this revolution. Keep up the great work!”

Thanks Wayne, and we’re so glad you’re a part of our community!
