Study Finds Cell Phones The Most Important Piece of Technology

A study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that for the first time cell phones have eclipsed other forms of technology as the most important in American’s lives. Two years ago the land line was still considered the most important piece of technology in people’s lives. Further, the number of people who have sent a text message has risen from 41% in 2006 to 58% today. And 15% of people said they used their cell phone cameras daily.

We at Next2Friends have believed in this progression all along (hence our creation of one of the first fully integrated mobile communications platforms) but it is always nice to get a little vindication. It’s funny but sometime it seems that sociological studies come along and confirm what you already knew intuitively (though I admit many pieces of “common knowledge” turn out to be untrue upon study). But this report really speaks to what we at Next2Friends have been saying all along; mobile devices will continue to occupy a greater and greater roll in people’s lives and the line between mobile technology and the internet will fade.

The study was conducted from October 24th to December 2nd, 2007 and was the result of telephone polling (both land and cell lines) of 2054 adults. It had a sampling error of plus or minus 2 points, with slightly higher margins for subgroups.

We’re excited to be driving some of this change at Next2Friends. What a great time to be in Mobile Technology!
