Sonia is the winner of THE GREAT NEXT2FRIENDS VALENTINE’S DAY IPOD GIVEAWAY! The competition was for the person who had the most friends by February 14th. She sort of came out of nowhere to win. We at Next2Friends were watching people’s stats pretty closely and the competition looked to be between two other people, but in the closing 24 hours Sonia shot ahead by quite a few friends! So I admit, I’m still in the technological stone age. I receive my TV over the analog airwaves. Sure, I’m typing this on a laptop and have high speed internet, but I have an old TV set with the rabbit ears antenna. And I’ve been a little concerned at the thought that after February 17, 2009, I will no longer be able to use my TV. That is the date that all analog TV transmissions cease. In other words, all TV transmissions will be digital from then forward. Lately, I haven’t really been getting a whole lot from TV at all and have considered just going without, kind of a private rebellion, but there are other faithful TV watchers in my household that will miss it so something has to be worked out.

Well, for once, the US Government is offering help! They’ve started a program where people can apply for a $40 voucher to buy a DTV converter. (Actually, two per household, we wouldn’t want people to go without TV in the bedroom!) Apparently you can buy a DTV converter for between $40-$50. With the voucher that should make the converter almost free! Here’s where you can apply:

Hurray for the USA! For once I can say I am proud to be an American! Land of the Free….TV transmission…still!

We at Next2Friends are interested in all things Mobile so as I perused my daily Mobile Technology sites I had to give this thing called Modu a second look. Basically it is a modular handset that would attach to bigger “docking stations” that ideally would be everywhere, your car, your computer, and even your coffee machine! Check out the teaser:

Great idea huh? Of course mobile phone carriers are just dying to initiate something like this so they can break the “customer-walks-in-every-two-years-to-update-phone” conundrum. This way people would perhaps be seeking to “update” their look or find new gadgets for their phone all the time. Money, money, money.It seems that the glaring obstacle to this thing catching on would be the ubiquity of places you could “dock” your Modu. I’m thinking that popularity would have to exceed that of the iPod in order for it really to make sense to own one of these, and that will be no small feat. But stranger things have happened and it seems that Modu is getting some pretty heavy hitters involved. They will initially be partnering with Telecom Italia SpA in Italy, OAA Vimpel Communications in Russia and Cellcom Israel Ltd. US launch will not be until sometime in 2009. Either way, a very interesting idea that is launching into this crazy Mobile landscape. I look forward to seeing how they do!Real Life,Real Time,
